Rebecca Lee (Becky) is named for Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first African-American woman to become a physician in the United States.  She was also the only African-American woman to graduate from the New England Female Medical College.  Dr. Crumpler was born in Richmond Virginia in 1831.  Medical care for poor blacks was almost non-existent during the early 1800 and it was rare for woman and black men to be admitted to medical schools.  Rebecca Lee moved to Massachusetts in 1852 and worked as a nurse until she was accepted into the New England Female Medical College in 1860.  The Rebecca Lee Society, one of the first medical societies for African- American woman, was named in her honor.

Our little kitty, Rebecca Lee (Becky), had her own struggles.  When her family was trapped at the hospital, she would not go into the trap.  She spent 2 long days and nights alone on the campus in the rain and cold.  She cried and cried for her Mom and siblings but of course they were gone.  Finally at about 7:30pm on a very cold night, she went into the trap and was rescued.  Although she lost half her weight during this period, Becky was a determined little kitty and didn't give up.  She continued to move from bush to bush looking for her family.  We think Rebecca Lee the physician and Rebecca Lee the kitten have a lot in common.  Rebecca Lee (Becky) is a strong  little kitten and is now healthy and happy in her foster home.  She is busy eating and playing and getting ready to go to her new home.  Becky will always be a very small kitty and will probably always look like a kitten.

For more information on Becky or to make arrangements to meet her, please contact her Foster Mom, Betty, at 757-508-5298.
